“My 4-year-old daughter absolutely LOVES Capoeira! It’s the best class she does and has pretty much everything you could want – gymnastics, music, cultural tradition, collective spirit and a performance aspect that is great for her confidence. It’s also great for discipline – the teachers command real respect and really understand how to run a class for kids of this age. At the same time it’s really joyous and fun. I couldn’t recommend it more highly”

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a form of dance fighting which history roots back to the 16th century in Brazil. By 1920’s martial artists began to incorporate capoeira techniques into their practice. Capoeira later become a cultural heritage, internationally recognised and practised.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, self-defence and acrobatic movements enhancing fitness, discipline and confidence. It is fully inclusive for people of all ages and abilities and promotes creative expression and personal development.

It is known for its flowing movements to the rhythm of the music often involving hands on the ground turns, play fighting, inverted kicks and maneuvers.  The “ginga” (Pronounced “Jinga”) is a rocking step and the focal point of the technique.

Currently it is practised in every continent, in over 160 countries and by more than 8 million people. It’s the largest sharing heritage tool for Afro-Brazilian culture and Portuguese language. On 26 November 2014, capoeira was granted a special protected status as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
